I fell in love with hot pots in Scotland, where they are ubiquitous. For Christmas I asked for, and got an electric kettle from Chef's Choice and a French press coffee maker from Bodum, and I love the set up. No more bulky percolator hogging counter space, no more forgetting to turn off the cursed electric stove or worse--turning on the wrong burner and busting your best pyrex dish! Now making coffee or tea is a breeze; the process itself is actually delightful.
There's something about making coffee nearly by hand, short of hand cranking the coffee beans, that just makes it better. (I use this beauty from Mr. Coffee to ground my delicious Café Fair Nica Sol .) My only complaint was that the coffee got cold pretty quick. The thin glass carafe clearly wasn't built to hold heat, so I decided to knit a cozy. The pictures turned out alright. You can't see the mistakes I made quite as easily as I thought you might. It was simple to make, and because I used wool, it holds the heat in very nicely. I don't always drink my coffee in one setting, especially the eight cups this press makes, so it's nice to come back to it, sometimes an hour later, and still have hot coffee. The pattern comes from Design Sponge, and I highly recommend it.
