Tom Tancredo, GOP presidential candidate and Colorado Congressman, seems to believe that threatening to bomb Mecca would prevent further attacks by Islamist terrorists. This week, as
IowaPolitics.com reported, he had the following to say:
If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina. That is the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they would otherwise do.
So let me get this right. It's okay for America to have religious freedom, unless of course a few people from one faith attacks us. Then we take away the freedom for many many Americans, and citizens of many more nations, to practice their faith, that is, to travel to Mecca, an obligation of every able Muslim in the world.
I pray--seriously,
pray--that this man comes nowhere near the White House. It's bad enough he's on Capitol Hill. And it's really too bad there've been no moves from Congress to censure the guy, a move that might prevent war more than this half-baked plan.
Threatening what is most sacred to one's neighbor does little to prevent violence. Recognizing what is sacred within us all is the greatest deterrent.
